Passing of John Brown

I just wanted to take a moment and say THANK YOU to a man that did a great deal for the Buckeye breed for several decades.  John Brown of Loveland, Ohio is no longer with us as I type this today, he passed away in late February 2019 and his family asked that we respect his privacy as the family mourns their loss.

John helped many Ohio based Buckeye breeders/keeps get their start, in fact, some of my first birds were from John back in 2000 that I picked up at a poultry show in southern Ohio.  Those that knew John personally know he was an "old school" poultry keeper and it often took some time for you to gain his trust because he had been burned a time or two over the years.  John had a good eye for Buckeyes, both large fowl and bantam varieties plus he enjoyed helping others.

Although John and I both lived in SW Ohio we were more casual acquaintances than close friends. We often ran into one another from time to time at various poultry shows, flea markets or swap meets (livestock sales).  What I will remember most about John is he always had a smile on his face, at least every time I bumped into him, and didn't mind giving you his opinion about the Buckeyes in the show pens!  He loved all poultry and had a passion for a number of breeds but the Buckeye held a special place in his heart.

God speed fellow Buckeye man and rest in peace John Brown, while we continue the Buckeye tradition here on earth!

Geetings Peeps! It's that time of year......

2019 has arrived and it's hard to believe January has come and gone!  Here we are already 1 week into February and the calendar is reminding me it's time to UPDATE the American Buckeye Club Breeders Directory.  Normally, this is done around the holidays but the last couple of years folks just didn't want to be bothered so we put it off until January/February.  So far there have been a number of new additions and a few updates but more are expected in the coming weeks.

If you find an error or learn a breeder is no longer breeding or selling Buckeyes please email Jeff Lay at jefflay4686@gmail.com and let him know!  Once again for 2019, Jeff is ONLY offering adult Buckeyes but he usually knows who is offering day old chicks and/or hatching eggs around the country.  Need to find some stock give Jeff a shout if you hit a snag!  Hatchery's have gotten better with their Buckeye breeding programs in recent years, Meyer Hatchery has been turning out some dandy near show quality Buckeyes.  Don't hesitate to give them a go for your day old chick needs!

To ALL the Buckeye breeders out there, please do your best to respond to email, text, phone calls and letters.  We all get bombarded with them this time of year and its easy to get behind (I'm guilty).  Every year, we hear complaints from folks who cant reach a breeder on the directory so please take a look and make sure your contact information is up to date as well.

This page has been dormant for a while because GOOGLE had the page locked for some odd reason. Finally after many attempts the American Buckeye Club is back up and running!  In the coming weeks, during the Christmas break, we will be updating the Buckeye Breeders Directory completely.

Greetings Buckeye Nation!


It's been a while since we added any new updates to the American Buckeye Club (ABC) blog or website but here we go.  Our Buckeye Breeder Directory is constantly changing and we strive to keep it updated the best we can.  However, some items fall thru the cracks and some breeders drop out without any notification!  If you know of any changes that need to be made please contact Jeff Lay at jefflay4686@gmail.com and let him know what needs updated, deleted or corrected.


As we move into the fall poultry show season lots of folks are going to many local shows and poultry swaps. If you would like us to add any news or events to the ABC blog please let us know!  You can use the same email address above and Jeff will be happy to add any events you like.  If your Buckeyes WIN at a poultry show, please provide us with pictures and details so that we can get those added as well.


Finally, the Ohio National (ON) is just around the corner in early November in Columbus, Ohio and we highly recommend folks plan to attend and visit the American Buckeye Club table!  Once again we will have lots of great items for the kids, Buckeye Breed information and another HUGE gift to Give-Away.  Generally, several top Buckeye breeders are on hand to answer your questions about Buckeye breeding as well.  We hope to see a lot of you in Columbus, Ohio the weekend of November 12, 2016.  Here is a link to the ON

Don't forget, your Buckeyes are moulting and this means they need a little more TLC this time of year and as always egg production drops off during the moult!  Giving your hens a little higher protein diet will help them bounce back quicker, too.

Ohio Department of Ag bans ALL poultry shows in Ohio

June 2, 2015 - Columbus, Ohio - In a recent press release from the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) the state of Ohio has banned ALL poultry shows in Ohio until January 2016 due to the Avian Influenza outbreak in other states.  This is a proactive approach to help protect Ohio's poultry industry which is one of the largest Ag industries in the Buckeye state.  The American Buckeye Club supports the ODA's position and we encourage our members to be cautious and pay strict attention to their own bio-security measures with respect to their Buckeye flocks.  Below is a copy of the letter releases at noon on June 2, 2015 with details around the proposed ban.

American Buckeye Club Elects Executive Board and District Directors (October 2014)

October 2, 2014 in Miamisburg, Ohio – The oldest Buckeye breed club, associated with the American Poultry Association (APA) since January 18, 1906, took a historic step in electing an Executive Board and District Directors during the first week of October 2014. In addition to the election of officers, a vote was held ratifying a new Constitution and By-Laws for the organization. “Since The American Buckeye Club was re-established in 2008 as a modern internet based breed club our mission was to promote the Buckeye breed around the world.  This has grown into a very large organization that called for a formal structure within the club.” said Jeff Lay who was responsible for bringing the American Buckeye Club (ABC) back to the poultry fancy several years ago.  The core members of the ABC held a meeting in which the following people were elected to their respective positions;

Joe Shumaker – President
Josh Ulrey – Vice President
Rick Presley – Treasurer/Secretary
Cindy Sturgill – District One Director
Sarah Patterson – District Two Director
Bill Francis – District Three Director
Karen Bratcher – District Four Director
Theri Voss – District Five Director

Above is a Map that shows the District Directors and the States or Regions each will cover.  Canada or District Six is currently covered by Joe Shumaker & Josh Ulrey until that position is filled.

Congratulations to ALL the newly elected officers!  Other club business included establishing a the club as a non-profit with the State of Ohio, establishing District, State and National meets for 2015, formalizing the membership application and completing the ABC “Buckeye Nation” News Letter.

The Buckeye Nation reigns supreme at the Ohio National in November 2014!

Columbus, Ohio – November 7-9^th the Nation’s largest poultry exhibition and swap of 2014 took place in Columbus, Ohio with thousands of people attending and nearly 10,000 fowl entered in the exhibition! This year marked the 100^th Anniversary of the American Bantam Association (ABA) and this brought in record numbers for the 3 day Ohio National (ON) meet. Not only were the entries of bantams record setting but entries for geese, turkeys, ducks, pigeons and large fowl chickens was equally incredible. 

The American class of Large fowl was well represented with record numbers of Rhode Island Reds, White Rocks, Dominiques and Buckeyes to name a few.  The Buckeye class was one of the largest groups of Buckeyes assembled in modern times with nearly 70 entries overall.  The American Buckeye Club (ABC) had several members from ALL over the USA with entries as well and lots of folks came out to support their club.

In addition to the birds being displayed the American Buckeye Club had a display table that received a great deal of traffic and visitors from all over the USA and Canada.  Nearly 100 new members were signed up during the event and many more sent completed applications afterward as well.  All three days were very busy for the ABC directors, family and members who worked the table and show.

The ABC had several raffles and prizes that were awarded at the show and that also contributed to the crowds around the table each day!  The BIG GRAND PRIZE was the enormous Gift Basket, valued at over $200, assembled by ABC members and directors which overflowed with a number of great items.  When the raffle concluded Robert Rhodes of MA was the winner of the raffle and took the basket back to New England!  A fitting win to a man who has been a legend in the Buckeye community for many, many years.  Robert Rhodes has been breeding and keeping Buckeyes perhaps longer than any other Buckeye breeder alive and his son has now stepped up to keep the legacy alive and well.

No poultry event as large as the ON with a huge gathering of Buckeye enthusiasts would be complete without giving away some Buckeye birds. This year, ABC President Joe Shumaker provided a Trio of Buckeye Bantams for one lucky winner and that winner was Dawson Latham of Lima, Ohio.  Young Mr. Latham is a Junior exhibitor of Buckeyes and other breeds who is also a member of the American Buckeye Club, congratulations to Dawson!

Finally, we want to thank everyone who came out to the Ohio National and helped the ABC kick off our membership drive for 2015 and beyond.  The ON is a great place to visit, meet new friends and visit with long time friends as well, it’s a place to share info and buy or sell a few birds that might produce the next season’s big winner!  With the launch of a new board of directors the ABC is poised for tremendous growth and with well over 1100 members in the club we expect great things in the coming years.

 

October has been a great month for the Buckeye Nation!

October 20, 2015 – Poultry show season is in full swing and October has been a super month for American Buckeye Club members and their Buckeyes!  Early in the month Shumaker Farm’s took Reserve Grand Champion with a Buckeye Cockerel at the SOPA in Lucasville, Ohio.

Last week at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh, NC the Taylor family did extremely well with their Buckeyes.  Marie Taylor and her daughter teamed up to show a few Buckeyes at the fair in the open and junior divisions and came home with Grand Champions in both!  Congratulations to the Taylor family for their hard work and dedication to the breed.

During this past weekend, October 18^th, there was the Pee Dee Poultry Show in South Carolina where ABC member Ginni Hallman participated in her very first poultry show with a few Buckeyes.  Her Buckeye Cockerel, which was just 6 months old, won Reserve American and Ginni was very pleased to say the least!

Finally, at the Lebanon Indiana Poultry Show, members Bill and Geri Dyke also participated in their very first poultry exhibition and their Buckeye Cockerel won Best of Breed and pullet won Reserve!  Congratulations to everyone who participated in poultry shows so far this month and did well with their Buckeyes.  In addition, thanks to ALL who are breeding, raising and showing Buckeyes, we need to continue spreading the word about this fantastic fowl.

Eastern Ohio Poultry Association inaugural show a BIG hit!

September 2014 Summit County Fairgrounds, Ohio – The Eastern Ohio Poultry Association (EOPA) held the inaugural poultry show on September 20-21 and had an outstanding turn out with over 1000 fowl entries!  Among the many National, State, and Regional meets The American Buckeye Club held their 2nd club meet for 2014  and the ABC's 4th overall meet.  Aside from the outstanding attendance at the EOPA it was a great weekend for the Buckeye breed in both the Open and Junior events.

A total of 30 buckeyes were exhibited by several different exhibitors, 24 large fowl and 6 bantams. Best of Breed, Champion American, Grand Champion Large Fowl and Reserve Super Grand Champion of the Show in the Open went to Shumaker Farm with a Buckeye cockerel. Shumaker Farm also had the Reserve of Breed with a very nice pullet. In the Junior Class, Sydney Shumaker earned Best of Breed with a nice Buckeye pullet but won the American Class with her outstanding Rhode Island Red Hen! Kayleigh Horton of Montpelier, OH earned Reserve of Breed with another representation of the breed with a Buckeye pullet and she was all smiles.

As for the Bantams, Shumaker Farm earned Best of Breed (cockerel) and Reserve of Breed (pullet) in the Open Show while Sydney Shumaker earned Best of Breed (cockerel) and Reserve of Breed (pullet) in the Junior Show. Sydney's Best of Breed cockerel finished winning the AOCCL class. In our opinion, that is not bad for her first time exhibiting the bantam Buckeye breed!

We would like to thank Nathanael Medley and the entire Medley family for putting together an outstanding show!  Even with this being their first effort they will be hard pressed to improve on it for next year, at least everyone from the ABC felt their first show was a huge success.

Again congratulations to Joe & Sydney Shumaker of Shumaker Farm for their victories at the EOPA and showing the world they are truly breeders of Champion Buckeyes!  When asked about the Buckeye Cockerel that nearly won the whole show, Joe had this to say, "This young Buckeye Cockerel that was selected is a 4th generation Champion! His great grand sire, grand sire, and sire have all made it to Champion Row! With this being his first show, he'll only get better. The future looks very promising."

APA and Ohio State Senate Recognizes FIRST Buckeye "Grand Master Exhibitor"

Dayton, Ohio - June 6, 2014


The first ever "Grand Master", perhaps in the entire history of the Buckeye breed, was announced with recognition from the American Poultry Association (APA) Secretary early this month prior to the release of the APA's 2014 Year Book.  In order to achieve "Grand Master" within the APA one must achieve 100 or more points showing the same variety of fowl. Shumaker Farms Poultry has reached this milestone while showing their Buckeyes for only 4 short years!  Joe Shumaker and his daughter Sydney are a father daughter team that have been breeding and showing Buckeyes around the Midwest since 2009.  The Shumaker's raise their poultry in Wilmington, Ohio which is located in the Southwest portion of the Buckeye state.


Joe Shumaker had this to say to American Buckeye Club Members;

"Hey everyone, exciting news for Buckeye Nation and myself. The Buckeye breed officially has its first Grand Master. I confirmed it with secretary of the APA. I successfully earned enough points to be recognized as a Master Breeder last year and will be recognized in the APA yearbook. I had 91 points towards the Grand Master going into 2014. After winning in Marietta, OH and in Frankfort, KY this year, I have enough points to recognized as the first ever Buckeye Grand Master!"

Buckeyes win BIG at Bluegrass Poultry Association Show Frankfort, KY

The American Buckeye Club would like to congratulate Joe and Sydney Shumaker of Shumaker Farms for their tremendous success on April 5, 2014.  Here is a report in Joe's very own words;

"April 5th; the day started out chilly!! Where has spring gone?!?! A fellow breeder (Jeff Lay), Sydney and myself took a ride down to the Bluegrass Poultry Association's spring event to exhibit our buckeyes. It was a great day full of laughter and enjoyment! There were 14 buckeyes present (17 entered by 5 exhibitors but 1 was unable to make it); 2 exhibitors from Ohio and 2 from Kentucky. The show ...had just over 700 birds primarily bantams but the American class had approximately 30 birds in it. I was hoping the buckeyes would have a good showing and they did but the majority of the buckeyes present could have been better which is a shame although I expected it. Sydney and I won the Champion American with a cock bird and Reserve Champion American with a cockerel. This is very exciting! That cockerel is going to be quite the bird next year as he matures! The cock bird went on to earn Champion Large Fowl honors to put a cap on a wonderful day! Looking forward to the next show!"

Buckeye Hatching Eggs & Buckeye Chicks

Every year around this time we get hundreds of emails, phone calls and text messages from folks wanting to purchase Buckeye hatching eggs or day old Buckeye chicks.  The American Buckeye Club's "Breeder Directory" page is a great first place to look!  If you cant find a breeder in your area or state consider contacting out of state breeders, many will ship to ALL parts of the USA.  Hatcheries are another option to consider if you do not have any desire to breed your Buckeyes in the future!  However, hatcheries typically sell day old chicks only.

Buying hatching eggs is generally more risky than day old chicks but hatching eggs are lower in cost as well.  Shipping hatching eggs through the USPS can result in poor hatches due to temperature swings and vibration.  Many buyers report good results from buying hatching eggs but the risk is always present.  If you purchase hatching eggs, we recommend having them shipped in late April thru mid June when temperatures are more stable across the USA.  In addition, we suggest you make arrangements to pick up the box of hatching eggs at your post office.  The seller can write "Call and Hold for Pick-Up" on the box along with your phone number and the post master will call you when they arrive at the post office.  This insures your hatching eggs don't ride around all day in the back of a mail truck or get dropped by a clumsy mail carrier!  Hatch rates can be dramatically improved with this simple practice.

Finally, don't buy Buckeyes from someone claiming they have a "Certified" or "Heritage" flock of Buckeyes!  This is a complete scam and nobody is qualified to certify Buckeye flocks and there is no such thing as a heritage Buckeye.  Don't be fooled by fancy websites that make these claims because they are generally selling some of the worst Buckeyes on the market.  The American Buckeye Club does NOT support the people offering "certification" of Buckeyes nor do we promote this "heritage" nonsense that has come about in recent years! We recommend "Standard Bred" Buckeyes provided by breeders who use the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection as their guide.

Buckeye Chicken Facts

With the Buckeye chick hatching season underway (or just around the corner for some) we thought it was time to share some FACTS about this fantastic fowl we call the Buckeye! Without a lot of fanfare or further ado lets get right into the Buckeye chicken facts;

1.) The ONLY breed of chicken developed by a woman, Nettie Metcalf of Warren, Ohio.

2.) An American class breed, accepted by the APA in 1904 and first found in the 1905 edition of the APA Standard of Perfection.

3.) The ONLY American class fowl that sports a Pea Comb.

4.) Developed from Barred Plymouth Rocks, Buff Cochins, Black Breasted Red Game Fowl and Dark Cornish (known as Indian Games in those days).

5.) A Dual Purpose fowl, meaning Buckeyes are good layers and good providers of meat.

6.) Buckeyes lay a medium to large Brown egg.

7.) Named after the state of Ohio, Buckeyes or Buckeye Reds as they were first called were given the name Buckeye because they originated in the Buckeye state!

8.) Buckeyes are NOT Rhode Island Reds (RIR's) and DID NOT originate from RIR's.

9.) A bar of slate under color in the Buckeyes back is what makes the Buckeye unique compared to other red breeds.

10.) Buckeyes are NOT endangered or nearly as rare as some other poultry breeds.

11.) The American Buckeye Club is the "original" Buckeye club dating back to 1909.

12.) Buckeyes are typically either "Standard Bred" or "Utility" (think hatchery stock) there is no such thing as a "Heritage Buckeye".

13.) Male Buckeyes, known as cockerels or cocks, are NOT typically aggressive.

The American Buckeye Club BLASTS into Columbus for the Ohio National

November 2, 2013 Columbus, Ohio - One of the largest poultry shows in the Midwest, the Ohio National, was the site of a recent American Buckeye Club member meet-up!  Several ABC members came out to show their support for various friends exhibiting and to see over 60 Buckeye's entered in both the Open and Junior shows.  Official numbers have not been released but the show promoters claimed over 500 exhibitors entered over 5000 fowl the first weekend in November and possibly set an Ohio National record!  In addition, Pigeons were being shown in large numbers for 2013 and it has been many, many years since they were exhibited at the ON.

A GREAT time was had by ALL and below are a few pictures of those smiling faces!!!

October 5, 2013 @ Lucasville, Ohio – The Sothern Ohio Poultry Association (S.O.P.A.) held their fall poultry show with nearly 2700 fowl exhibited by exhibitors from around the country.  One of the largest poultry shows held in Ohio the S.O.P.A. event is always highly anticipated.   American Buckeye Club members, Joe and Sydney Shumaker of Shumaker Farm's Poultry, won Reserve Champion Large Fowl with a Buckeye Cockerel. (See picture below) In addition, this win has given Shumaker Farm's enough APA points to achieve Grand Master Exhibitor and this was achieved by exhibiting Buckeyes! The "official" notice or certificate from the APA has yet to be received but needless to say the Shumaker's are extremely excited about their achievement.

Buckeyes making a significant impact at County Fairs in Ohio and Minnesota

Kristen Nicole Barnett of Clark County Ohio went home with a lot of ribbons and trophies this year!  She was successful with her goats, ducks, turkeys and chickens at the 2013 fair but it was her Buckeye Cock that was #1 Cock (large fowl). Kristen’s parents, Jason & Stacie Barnett are very proud of their daughters accomplishments and the hard work she puts into her 4H projects.

Alison Gossman of Ross County, Ohio received first place in Junior Fancy Chickens, Reserve Grand Champion of Fancy Chickens and Junior Showmanship of Poultry at the 2013 Ross County Fair with her Buckeyes. Her mother, Karen Gossman, wanted to thank Jeff Lay of Crains Run Ranch and Meloni Grubb of Chillicothe for helping the Gossman family with their Buckeye project!

Sydney Shumaker of Clinton County, Ohio took top honors with her Champion Buckeyes in Egg Production at the Clinton County Fair this summer.  She was also awarded overall “Outstanding Fancy Exhibitor, an award given for the many years of success she had showing her fowl.  Shumaker Farm Poultry has produced some of the best Buckeyes in the county, winning many Large Fowl Grand Championships.  To learn more visit http://www.shumakerfarmpoultry.com/

At the Olmsted County Fair in Rochester, Minnesota the Buckeyes also did well for the 4H kids. Shown by the Courson family, they took Grand and Reserve with a Buckeye Cock and Hen, breeding pen.  Below are pictures courtesy of Theri Voss and Prairie Chick Poultry.
